2nd Bangladesh Retail Congress Held

Bangladesh Brand Forum organized the second edition of Bangladesh Retail Congress on Saturday, 18th November, 2017 at Le Meridien, Dhaka. Presented by SHWAPNO, the congress engaged the retail community of the country with experts from home and abroad in 4 keynote sessions, 3 panel discussions, 2 case study presentations and 1 breakout session. The theme for this year’s congress was ‘Redefining Retail in Bangladesh’. The congress was powered by Monno Ceramics and Lotto Bangladesh.

Opening speech was delivered by Shariful Islam Founder and Managing Director of Bangladesh Brand Forum and the welcome speech was given by Kazi Jamil Islam, Managing Director, Express Leather Products Ltd. Alongside, special speeches were given by Sabbir Hasan Nasir, Executive Director, ACI Logistics Limited (SHWAPNO) and Rasheed Mymunul Islam, Deputy Managing Director, Monno Group of Industries.

The esteemed keynote speakers were – Damodar Mall, CEO – Grocery Retail, Reliance Retail Limited, and Author, Supermarketwala who spoke on ‘A Walk With Supermarketwala: Shopkeeper Or Agent Of Modernity?’; Philippines’ Franchise Guru Armando O. Bartolome,  PresidentGMB Management Services Global Inc. Guru’s session covered ‘Jump Starting The Retail Industry’. Arijit Chakraborti, Partner- Technology Consulting, PwC talked about “Building Blocks of The Future – How Technology Can Help in Retail Business Growth”. Shabri Prabhakar, Head of International Business, Coffee Day Global Limited illustrated ‘Brewing a Great Customer Experience-The Café Coffee Day Way.’

Three panel discussions that were held comprised of around 18 local industry stakeholders as moderator & panelists. These discussions focused on the following topics – ‘Future of Retail for Bangladesh’ which was moderated by Dr. Syed Ferhat Anwar, Professor, IBA, University of Dhaka. Panelists for this session were Kazi Jamil Islam, Managing Director, Express Leather Products Limited; Professor Mohammad Abdul Momen, Director, Pride Group; Reaz Uddin Al-Mamoon, Managing Director, Epyllion Group; Syed Nasim Manzur, Managing Director, Apex Footwear Limited; Tamara Hasan Abed, Senior Director, BRAC Enterprises.

The second panel consisted of the members, namely, Farhad Ahmad, CEO, Rahimafrooz Superstores Limited (Agora); Kazi Islam, Managing Director, Toroon International Ltd.; Mohammed Mesbah Uddin, CMO, Fair Group; Rubaiyat Jamil, Chief Executive Officer, Rangs Industries Limited; Sabbir Hasan Nasir, Executive Director, ACI Logistics Limited (SHWAPNO).The session was moderated Zeeshan Kingshuk Huq, Co-Founder and CEO, Kiksha.com and covered the topic ‘Technology in Retail’.

The third panel was on ‘Skill Development in Retail Sector’, moderated by Dr. Mohammed Tareque Aziz, Associate Professor, BRAC Business School. The panelists were, Ashraf Bin Taj, President, Marketing Society of Bangladesh; Mohammad Ashraful Alam, COO, BRAC Aarong; Rajan Pillai, COO, Apex Footwear Limited; Selim H Rahman, Chairman & Managing Director, HATIL Complex Ltd.; and Yeamin Sharif Chowdhury, Head of Business, Transcom Electronics Limited.

Two local Case Studies were presented by Hatil Complex Ltd. And Daraaz Bangladesh Ltd. Topic for Hatil’s case study was ‘Going beyond Border’ and was presented by Dewan Atif Rashid, Business Development Adviser, HATIL Complex Limited. From Daraaz Bangladesh Ltd., Managing Director Syed Mostahidal Hoq presented their case on the topic ‘Online Retail Management’.

One Breakout Session, namely ‘Coupons: The Retail Catalyst’ was conducted by Abraham Punnoose, Managing Director, Celltick India & Africa and Kazi Islam, Managing Director, Toroon International Limited.

This year, the 2nd Bangladesh Retail Congress was presented by SHWAPNO, powered by Monno Ceramic and Lotto Bangladesh, in association with BRAC Aarong, Hatil Complex Ltd., and Sailor.
