Digital Chittagong envisioned on a Grameenphone panel discussion

Speakers at a panel discussion titled “Digital Development: Road to Empowerment” stressed on the need to digitalizing the services in Chittagong to prepare for the revolutionary changes that await the country and the world. The discussion was arranged by Grameenphone at Radisson Blu Bay View, Chittagong today (December 12).

Chittagong is the commercial capital of Bangladesh. Its economy generates 40 percent of industrial output, 80 percent of international trade and 50 percent of revenue for the government. Despite these achievements, there are lot more expectation from Chittagong as our economy is getting bigger and the city needs more development to compete with other commercial and maritime hubs of the region. Grameenphone as the leading digital service provider in the country sees that Digital technology can help the city to bridge the gaps among productivity, infrastructure, and targets assigned to it.

Grameenphone’s Deputy CEO Mr. Yasir Azman and Telenor Health CEO, Mr. Sajid Rahman presented two keynote papers on Digital Transformation in Telecom Sector and Digital Health Information and services respectively.

The discussion was participated by Aameir Alihussain, Managing Director of BSRM Limited, Mahbubul Alam, President Chittagong Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Munir H. Khan, Director, KDS Steel, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ahsan Ullah, Head of Electronics and Telecom Engineering, CUET.  Mr. Wahed Malek, Managing Editor, The Daily Azadi moderated the panel discussion.

Speaking on the occasion Aameir Alihussain said, “The businesses and manufacturing industries have to embrace the digitalization, otherwise we will be left behind in this competitive world.”

Munir H Khan, added that “technology has brought us a range tools, which, if used correctly, can change the face of the business.”

Mahbubul Alam stressed on the digitalization of the processes of Chittagong port to avoid bottlenecks that reduce the productivity of the port and thus the economy of the country.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ahsan Ullah said, “Information security is very important for successful digitalization. While the service providers have to implement strong security system, the users should be more informed and aware of the services they use.”

Sajid Rahman said that to reap the benefit of digital services behavioral changes is important among the users as they need to believe in some virtual solutions.

Yasir Azman said that Grameenphone is leading digital transformation both internally and externally,” While all internal services and work processes are being done digitally, we are also changing our customer interfaces and sales and distribution system making them more digitally accessible.”

The program started with the welcome speech by the Head of Communications of Grameenphone Nehal Ahmed and concluded with the vote of thanks and closing remarks by the Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Mahmud Hossain.

Digitalization of the economy offers enormous opportunities while posing daunting challenges. The panelists acknowledged that it is important for Chittagong as well as the country to embrace the changes to reap the benefits.
