Bangladeshi internet users will be able to use internet for free on their mobile phone from the end of March. Primarily, under Internet.org project, users can access Facebook, National Information portal, Service Portal, National Forms Portal, Wikipedia along with 2 news site; in total 6 portals can be accessed.

In order to use the free internet the portals need to be mobile optimized and cannot contain too many photos. Moreover, users won’t be able to use JavaScript as per the conditions set by Internet.org team visiting Bangladesh. Accordingly, the project has been undertaken by the web developers. Therefore, even though the service has been underway, the app can be used in two different ways either by downloading the app or by logging into Internet.Org. By logging in the site users won’t be able to view business ads. Although information on the site can be viewed. The prospect has been confirmed on Saturday by South East Asia’s coordinator Dipti Gaur before leaving Bangladesh. She confirmed that the idea to implement Zero Internet has been welcomed by the Government. The project also has made significant strides. Also, the idea has been well received by Robi and Grameenphone. Jimmy Wales the co-founder of Wikipedia also has welcomed the whole idea of Zero Internet. Led by Dipti Gaur the technical team from Internet.Org has already spoken to 20 NGO’s, 2 National Newspaper, mobile phone operator and few other institutions. Most of the institutions showed positive gesture toward letting people use free internet. Anir Chowdhury policy adviser from Prime Minister’s office told us that at the end of the project 6 mobile operators will be able to provide internet service free of cost.
